How to Teach a Child to Read the Quran: A Simple Starting Plan
By the Quran and Deeniyat UK team. Published 2026-10-07.
When should a child start?
There is no single right age. Many families begin between about four and six, once a child can sit calmly for ten minutes and enjoys repeating sounds. Older children and adults can begin at any time, and they often progress faster because they understand instructions.
You do not need to read Arabic yourself
Parents often worry that they cannot help. You do not need to read Arabic. Your job is to set a regular time, sit nearby, show interest and praise effort. A teacher or good audio can provide the correct sound.
A simple four-step path
- Step 1, letters and sounds: learn to recognise each Arabic letter and say its sound. The Noorani Qaida is the usual starting book.
- Step 2, short vowels and joining: learn Zabar, Zer and Pesh, then how letters join to make words.
- Step 3, reading the Quran: move to Nazra, reading the Quran page by page with a teacher.
- Step 4, short surahs and Tajweed: memorise short surahs and add the rules of Tajweed once reading is steady.
Making it a daily habit
- Choose one fixed time, such as after Maghrib or before bed.
- Keep sessions short: 10 to 15 minutes works better than an hour once a week.
- Use a small reward, such as a sticker chart, for a week of practice.
- Keep a calm tone. If your child is tired, stop early and try again tomorrow.
Mistakes to avoid
- Jumping to the Quran before the child knows the letters and vowels.
- Comparing your child with a brother, sister or cousin.
- Long, tiring sessions that make Quran time feel like a punishment.
- Relying only on apps. Children learn pronunciation best when someone listens and corrects them.
When a live teacher helps
A teacher notices small mistakes straight away, adjusts the pace, and keeps your child motivated. At Quran and Deeniyat UK, lessons are one to one on Zoom, and every new child can join up to three classes free so you can see how it feels before deciding.
